In an April 7, 2008 interview with Fox News reporter John Lott, Obama stated " I don't believe people should be able to own guns". He made light of this comment later in his Presidential campaign when his anti-gun reputation became more public. When he was asked about the comment in a later Fox News interview he tried to retract the statement, but was unable to convince anyone of his anti-gun views.

In 2004, Barack Obama stated "I oppose concealed carry laws and would back Federal Legislation that would ban Americans from carrying concealed weapons, with the exception of law enforcement officers". He also stated "A Federal carry ban was needed to prevent other states flawed concealed weapons laws from threatening the safety of Illinois residents". This Legislation he proposed would make it illegal for any individual in the United States to carry a concealed weapon. Illinois is one of only two states in the country that prohibit any type of gun carry permits. In the Illinois State Senate, Barack Obama once stated "I think this is an excellent idea that we would create a felony offense and a misdemeanor offense, depending on the kinds of weapons you're carrying. Basically, the provision would say that there are category one weapons: handguns, sawed-off shotguns, sawed-off rifles, other firearms that are small enough to store on their person, that to unlawfully possess and carry these weapons would be a felony; but, on the other hand, if you were going to be carrying a rifle or shotgun, a spring gun, other firearm that were used for hunting, then that would be a misdemeanor".

I've said before we should have a much tougher background check system, one that's much more effective and make sure there aren't loopholes out there like the gun show loophole". Barack Obama wants to put strict limitations on individuals rights to purchase guns at gun shows.

Barack Obama opposes the Gun Show Loophole which allows individuals to sell guns at gun shows to other individuals without conducting a background check through the National Criminal Background Check System. This will eliminate an individual's right to purchase a gun from another individual at any gun show throughout the country. Unless you have a Federal Firearms Dealer License, you will not be allowed to purchase or sell your guns at gun shows.

His campaign later tried to convince voters his staff filled out the questionnaire incorrectly, but the statement was clearly written in Barack Obama's handwriting.

As an Illinois State Senator, Barack Obama introduced legislation that would raise taxes on guns and ammunition to 500 percent. Federal Tax Rates on guns and ammunition are currently at 11 percent. Under Barack Obama's Gun Control Plan, a box of ammunition that now costs 20 dollars will soon cost 100 dollars. A 400 dollar gun will soon cost over 2000 dollars. A Specialty or Limited Edition Gun that now can be purchased for $2,500 will cost over $12,500. This will not only keep guns and ammunition out of the hands of most Americans, it will bankrupt most gun and ammunition manufacturers who will see their sales become nearly non-existent

The Joyce Federation supports radical anti gun groups throughout the United States. Under Barack Obama's leadership, the Joyce Foundation has contributed over $18,000,000 to several anti gun organizations including the Violence Policy Center and the Soros Open Society, which supports a worldwide ban on the manufacturer, sale, and possession of firearms. Under Barack Obama's leadership, the Joyce Federation helped introduce legislation that allowed frivolous lawsuits against firearms manufacturers that was designed to bankrupt the gun industry.
Obama voted several times to allow prosecution of a person using a gun in defense of their home
In 2003 a man in the Chicago suburb of Wilmette shot a violent repeat offender in his home. After shooting the repeat offender, the homeowner was charged with illegal possession of a firearm. Because of this incident, legislation was quickly introduced in the Illinois State Legislature that would allow a person to avoid prosecution when they are using a firearm in self defense. On four separate occasions, Barack Obama voted to allow the home owner to be prosecuted for possession of a firearm. Barack Obama supports the prosecution of any person that uses a firearm in self defense or in the defense of their family's home.
Obama supports frivolous lawsuits against gun manufacturers
In 1998, the Joyce Foundation, once led by Barack Obama, and a group of anti-gun advocates introduced legislation that allowed people to file frivolous lawsuits against gun manufacturers in an effort to bankrupt the firearms industry. In 2005, after seven years of hard work, the National Rifle Association helped pass the Protection of Lawful Commerce In Arms Act. This new law prohibits politically motivated lawsuits against gun manufacturers and was strongly opposed by both Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Both Senators voted against the Protection of Lawful Commerce In Arms Act.

This idea of banning gun stores would close over 90% of gun stores in America. It would eliminate gun stores in every major American city's metropolitan area and allow gun stores to operate only in the most remote parts of the country.

During Obama's tenure as a State Senator, and United State Senator, he has voted for every law that requires waiting periods on all handgun purchases. Most of the laws he supported required hand gun purchasers to apply for a hand gun buying permit, then wait 30 days before being able to purchase the hand gun. Joe Biden has also supported handgun waiting periods throughout his career.

In 2005 as a United States Senator, Barack Obama voted for a law introduced by Edward Kennedy that would ban on all center-fire rifle ammunition used for hunting. The ATF studied this issue and rejected it as "flawed gun legislation". If this law would have passed you would no longer be allowed use any type of center-fire ammunition, whether it was used for hunting, target shooting, or home defense. Thankfully, John McCain and several other gun ownership advocates in Congress were able to block this reckless ammunition ban.

This is very similar to the Australian gun ban that criminalized hundreds of thousands of law abiding Australian gun owners.

In October of 2004, Barack Obama said "I think it is a scandal that President Bush did not authorize a renewal of the Clinton Gun Ban." Barack Obama is expected to push very hard to renew the ban on assault weapons. Joe Biden has also authored similar gun ban legislation.

When Australia recently implemented a complete ban on guns, they forcefully removed over 600,000 guns from lawful gun owners. Within the first year of the gun ban, Australia saw a 300 percent increase in gun homicides and a 44 percent increase in burglaries. After the Washington DC Handgun Ban went into effect in 1977, our Nation's Capitol saw violent crimes increase by 400 percent. Gun Control Does Not Work
